Performance review may have sparked NASA shooting

advertisement

Police said Saturday that a bad performance review may have led a NASA contractor to fatally shoot his supervisor and take another employee hostage before killing himself.

The gunman, a career NASA civil servant identified as Bill Phillips, received an e-mail from NASA employee and supervisor David Beverly last month. The e-mail detailed Phillips' "job deficiencies" and outlined a plan for improvement.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

What is going on with people at NASA? Two bizarre incidents in less than six months. Remember astronaut Lisa Nowak? Early this year she was charged of attempted murder due to a love-affair triangle. Nowak and her rival were both in a relationship with Navy Cmdr. Bill Oefelein, another astronaut.

It seems like NASA needs to review its work environment, workforce interactions and its implications, and how it is impacting their people. Where are those guys who teach anger management?
